  2. Many people agree that Reagan was one of the great orators in presidential history. An example would be his Cold War policy in which if "we win, they lose". Some of this success may be due to his short stint as an actor. Reagan also had the gift of being optimistic, stating that we will meet challenges and always looked forward to the future. His sense of humor was also another key in making him more relatable to the people. Ronald Reagan also spoke to the younger people, attracting the most young Republican voters in history. He was also a patriot, who always put his country first. Unlike many other people, he was confident, and stood for something. Whether it be building the defense budget, cutting taxes, or balancing the budget, Reagan always knew what to say.

    Reagan is well known as being the Great Communicator. In part this was because of his pretty face. Being a former actor, Reagan had good stage presence and years of experience of public speaking. He seemed at ease, always confident and comfortable on stage. Not only did he have the face, he knew exactly how to use it.  But most important were the things he said. His words were optimistic, and his unwavering patriotism gained him support. His words proved that he was just another citizen. Core beliefs, like being against big government, also made him relatable and helped him connect with public. And being a former Democrat, but current Republican, made his relatable with both parties. My favorite thing during this program was when he got frustrated during a speech in San Diego and lost his cool. There was a heckler in the audience and Reagan just said, “Aww shut up.” All in all just as Aditya mentioned, Reagan always knew just what to say.

  4. Reagan was a Great Communicator for many reasons. For example, he was a "Great Comforter" in times of peril, soothing families in when their loved ones died, as during the death of the Challenger crew. Also, he always spoke the truth and did not try to hide anthing. This was clearly demonstrated during the Iran-Contra affair, as Reagan took full responsibility for it, and was perhaps one of the biggest reasons why he survived the political scandal. All in all, Reagan's ability to connect with the people was apparent and won him not only the Presidency, but also the people's trust.

    President Reagan used his empathetic approach to captivate the hearts of Americans everywhere. He positioned himself as an outsider to Washington to portray himself as a man that could change government. He has been labeled the Great Communicator because of his effective approach in both consoling and connecting with the people, and stands as someone that can be looked up to for inspiration.

    Reagan was a very popular president during the 20th century. As many people know, President Ronald Reagan was known as the "Great Communicator." He was able to get his message across because not only was he confident and optimistic, but he also had a sense of humor. He was able to connect with the people. He was also known as a comforter, comforting a nation that was in shock when the Challenger exploded and when the plane carrying veterans home for Christmas crashed. He had solid beliefs. He was able to work with both parties, being a former Democrat and then turned into a Republican. He was able to redefine how America saw itself and was able to restore the optimism in Americans.

  7. I think Reagan's widespread popularity arose from his ability to connect with the average American. His values encompassed those of the concerned citizens of the country. His sense of humor made him very likeable as a candidate. For example, when Reagan was running for re-election against his democratic challenger Arthur Mondale, Reagan asserted that "I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience." His openness to self- deprecating humor made him a believable, well-intentioned President. He "hung a lantern" on his old age which further augmented his affability with the American people. This earnestness and genuineness allowed him to effectively win the hearts of Americans and win the presidency.

    From watching this clip, it is very apparent that Ronald Reagan is a brilliant speaker and knows how to communicate with the average American population. I believe his speaking skills are natural talent that has evolved because of his past experiences. With his sense of humor and his personality, his soothing voice puts his listeners at ease. His optimistic virtues greatly increases his popularity which is what I believe as the reason why he won presidency. Even though he failed getting the republican candidacy twice, he continued to strive to become president. On top of that, he continued to serve even after his assassination attempt shows his will to serve his country.

    Reagan is obviously a great communicator. His speeches and interviews prove that he tries to make a genuine connection with his audience. When he speaks about matters it doesn't seem like he's giving the people just what they want to hear, he puts in the extra effort to make sure that the people know he cares about these issues too. Reagan's humor helped his campaign a lot. That balance between being professional and still have a personality was relatable to the people which helped him form the bond with the American people. He gets his message across, but ultimately he was successful because the people liked him and respected him. As the video said, even when he gave an outburst during a speech, it seemed to just work to his advantage anyway.

I believe that his ability to sway the public began with his acting career and he used his abilities to become governor of California. With his speech abilities, it is easy to see why people believed that he was just like them

His communications skills come naturally, this has not only benefited him as a actor but also in his presidency. his ability of attracting the public to his policy's and making them believe that that is the right choice has affected the american people not only 35 years ago but also set the course for America we know today. He is also very courageous for surviving an assassination attempt and still continuing surviving the American people.

  12. There could not be a better way to describe Regan than the Great Communicator. The way he talked and gave speeches made people feel that they were being heard as well as things were getting done. he is the great communicator because even during a speech on his tour for campaigning on the last day he was tired and getting annoyed said shut up which led to his advantage, it could of taken a bad turn but due to his good reputation it didn't. I also believe that being on the radio and being on the big screen actually helped him because it helped him give better speeches and he knew what the people were like and what they wanted. Being on the big screen helped him get used the cameras and reporters everywhere. No one can deny his speaking skills were amazing and just plain brilliant.

    In "The Great Communicator," Ryan Williams discusses Ronald Reagan's legacy as well as the factors that shaped his success as president. The key aspect of Reagan's power and influence among the hearts of the American people was his incredible ability to connect with the people and communicate his good humor, confidence, patriotism, and ideas on freedom and self-government. Reagan emphasized a "government for, by, and of the people." His comfortable demeanor in front of the camera and eloquence scored him major points in his success as he charmed his country as well as convinced them to embrace his ideas for improvement and change for the better.

    In addition to his charm, Reagan was also tough. His initial determination in fighting the cold war displayed his profound love and nationalism for America. However, toward the end of the war, the former president's making amends and friendship with the Soviet Union as well as his open realization that the countries were really not too different eventually helped American win the war.

    Reagan's acknowledgement of his mistakes and his ability to be optimistic by putting things into perspective to change for the better helped the country see the better in him, as he has always done for his people. Overall, Reagan possessed incredible outlook and personality to help him direct the country to a better place prior to his years in office, but his great skill in communication only added to his inevitable success provided to him from his good heart and dreams for the country.

    Reagan was quite the eloquent speaker - which is why he donned the name "The Great Communicator". He was indeed one who actively participated and asserted his points of view for the benefit of the American people. He was placed in a similar position as we are currently in - in an economic recession and he gave to Americans what no economic stimulus plan could do, morale - through his words. He was a staunch advocate of Democracy and aggressively spread the message of the Soviet's non-democratic ways. I do, somewhat, agree with the critics mentioned in the beginning of this video, however. I see nothing overly great in Reagan that I do not see in Obama, or any other president for that matter. It just happened to be his luck in the time and place he was put in that made him such a "star". That word is especially fitting considering his Hollywood background. Essentially, Reagan was nothing more than the figurehead of America at the time and should be remembered as such. His vision is similar to the vision of every president this country has had.

  15. Ronald Reagan was one of the presidents of all time because of his ability to communicate with the American people. I believe Reagan attained this ability of communication from his years in movies and television. He emphasized the idea of reforming the government and freedom. He told people what they wanted to hear. Although he was great at communicating,several of his plans didn't work, for example his plan to fix the economy only made things worse. Reagan had no problem in front of the camera unlike several presidents before him. He was one of the few presidents to have humor whether it was during an interview or a speech he always found a way to make people laugh. Reagan was the best making a situation seem better that it actually was like the Iran hostage situation during the first few days in his presidency. He won the hearts of the American people which helped him greatly during his time in the White House.

    I like the fact that Reagan was known for being able to connect with your daily folk. I think he was known as the Great Communicator because he was able to relate to the citizens in America. Also, his inclusion of comedy in speeches made him seem more grounded and real. He didn't seem like someone that was up in the clouds or someone that people could not understand. His strength in handling the Cold War and being able to take action right away showed his dedication to America. His upbeat personality and his optimistic belief in the American people were the traits that got the public on his side. What I admire about Reagan as a President is that he was aware of his skills and weaknesses and he played them all to his advantage. His confidence was inspiring, as well.

  18. Reagan's acting past helped him in being a great speaker. He has charisma, which causes Americans to like him, and he knew how to make citizens feel comfortable. His past as a radio broadcaster made him a direct speaker, and he became a skilled speech-deliverer. He was confident, making the listeners confident in him as a result. His sense of humor really made him connectable with the people. All of these qualities made him a good communicator.

  19. Reagan was an excellent President because of his ability to communicate with the American people, hence the title of this clip. He was able to connect with the people in a way that few people could do, let a lone another President. He provided the Americans hope which was important because during his presidency the country was in a deep economic recession. He was optimistic about the future and actually cared about the American people. Reagan's voice turned around many of the people who had distrusted government and it was also able to win him the presidential election which should show the genius behind the man.

    Ronald Reagan, the Great Communicator, was the most popular president in the 20th century. Despite that fact that he was lost at words when there was no script, he had the ability to connect with the people of United States. His words were always confident, optimistic, and patriotic with hope and encouragement.

    This speaking talent of his came from his acting skills from his previous career. Not only that but he was always at ease in front of the camera. He was also not scare to speak out to his critics, making humor jokes to lighten the mood up. But when worse comes the worst, during the days of grief and tears, he gave hope to everyone. Many found voice in Reagan. But on top of that, he was tough, especially with the Soviet Union. Not only did he not want to lose the Cold War, he wanted to win it. Although he was always challenging the Soviets, he was willing to make arrangements/agreements with them.

    Although there is no doubt that Reagan was a great communicator, it seemed that he had a lot of luck on his side. One example is during a forum when someone asked to have Reagan's microphone turned off to which Reagan responded that he was paying for his microphone - a response that led the audience to cheering for him. The video then mentioned that Reagan probably got the line from a movie, and him being a movie actor probably made him familiar with certain lines.

He is especially good at picking the appropriate moment to make certain statements. He is also good at picking encouraging, positive words. Reagan also has a good sense of humor and effectively uses that to his advantage. He is also friendly towards his opponents, unlike the current Congress and Republican candidates.

  25. I think Reagan's phenomenal success was drawn from several areas. For one, his sense of humor was as powerful a means of endearing himself to Americans as it was a weapon against his opponents. Second his age and deep reassuring voice made him seem to be a wise yet energetic grandfather. His patriotism, optimism, and honesty were important traits in his speeches that allowed him to come free from the Iran-Contras scandal, because he had the trust of Americans and because people generally like people who tell the truth and/or praise them. The content of Reagan's speeches was quite impressive. They reminded me of JFK's inaugural address which we studied in AP English last year. Reagan's speeches contained Biblical or grand allusions, but also contained material of his own making, such as his excellent sense of humor. I was surprised when Reagan hugged people at memorial services like the one mourning the Challenger explosion, as I don't recall any other president being so warm. His speeches at memorial services were also respectful and paid homage well and artfully.

  27. Reagan was really a Great Communicator and a tad bit of luck. All of his positive impact was pretty much solely on how he communicated with others. He was a terrible president when it came to economics, but his luck came in when he started to fill in the hole which he himself created. His charisma followed through even with his old age, and everyone just loved him. His actions that gave confidence to the people, overshadowed the fact of his production as president. That is the bias of the media.

  28. I have considered both of the issue presented at the beginning of the film. Critics believe that, due to Reagan's acting background, his speeches and his actions were all an act and that he was able to connect to American citizens solely because of his skills. However, I think other wise. I do not believe that Ronald Reagan put up an act and be able to fool the whole nation when he was in office. Acting could only have carried him so far along. But, I believe that it was his passion, fueled by his notion to run the country, that allowed him to reach out to the citizens. His connection was genuine.

It has been speculated that due to his acting background, it was all a show. I don't believe that is true. I think that acting, being a spokesman for GE, and a radio host helped him in being able to speak so well. He's quite lucky too for having survived an assassination attempt. Overall, Reagan was very well rounded.

  30. I think the reason why Ronald Reagen received the title "The Great Communicator" was because he used the techniques he learned from his previous acting career in his presidency. He knew the perfect time for a joke as well as when to be serious. People were able to connect to him rather than be intimidated by his words. He grew up performing in front of people, therefore giving speeches was not a problem for him. In the video Mr. Johnson showed in class, Reagen mocks the famous saying "You're no Jack Kennedy" during his speech to really connect with his audience. I think it is because of these factors that Ronald Reagen is called "The Great Communicator".

Critics said "just a disengaged former actor with incredible good luck and good communication skills". Ronald Reagan was not just an actor, he stuck with his words ever since he made his debut speech all the way through his presidency. He knew how to grab people's attention and best of all he was probably the only president who knew how to make the people laugh. Acting can only get one so far, however, I believe it was his mind set that got him to where he was and how he honestly wanted to help the people of the United States of America

President Reagan was a public favorite because he didn’t belabor anything and because he put “communicated wide-reaching ideology and complex policies” into simple words that were easy to understand. For instance, he describe the Cold War as “we win, they lose”. Some criticized him and called him inexperienced, but his watering down told the public and others a lot about him. He understood the public and related to them much more than another president ever had and thus he created the ideal image of a president in the public’s eye. His words not only influenced and were appreciated by the American people but also by the international crowd. This demonstrates how greater of a communicator he was as he was able to understand his audience and appeal to them.

He achieves this in his innate ability to speak with confidence and honesty. His experience in front of the camera for several years probably contributed to this important skill. He knew how to be a leader without appearing unreachable. His humor allowed him to win the the affection of the public while remaining a very real, down-to-earth person. This is something that I believe made him a great leader. There is something about know-it-all, I-can-do-everything politicians that is off-putting. Just look at all the Republican candidates for the upcoming election. Reagan, however, knew just what to say to present himself in a personable, genuine manner.

    I think that the main reason why Reagan was able to become such an effective orator was his previous acting career. If Reagan and another politician were challenged to deliver an identical message, Reagan's would be more effective in that they way he speaks and presents the message appeals much more to the people. His eloquence, with a pinch of humor as well, combined with looks was what ultimately made Reagan the Great Communicator.

  44. Reagan was a great politician with his stunning movie star talent for the camera. He was the best of both worlds. This was a great benefit. Yes, he was once a movie star, yet, he still was taken seriously due to his great skills. He grabbed attention during the protests of 1968. He also fought back to allegations that he was too elderly and was not ready. However he fought back gracefully and with humor. His genuine charm, assuring character and confidence will take any individual very far and it took Reagan far.

  46. I believe that no one can stand a presidential term on luck alone. Reagan's speech skills are not just that of an actor's (although that must have helped) but I think that it is his charisma that allows him to captivate the millions of American watching him. And that's all he needs: the support of the people and the favor of the government. His words carry weight and meaning is just not enough for the everyday people. They need it presented in a way that will make them listen and Reagan brings that with his strong oration skills so I am in belief that his title of Great Communicator is aptly earned.

To be a president, making essential policies to drive the country forward towards success is important, but to be able to communicate these things to the public is just as vital. His speeches inspired the public and had convinced people to take action. In one of his speeches he said, “This is the issue of this election whether we believe our capacity for self government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.” This quote has a motivating effect that fills people with the will to take action to control their own lives rather than let the government control it for them. As an actor or as President of the United States, Ronald Reagan was a phenomenal orator.

Personally, the most awestriking quality I find in Reagan is his conception that one cannot lie to thr camera. Although Reagan was the President of the U.S that was hardly the image he hoped to convey to the American people. He wished to be seen as a citizen, leading his beloved country.   53. I think many people liked Ronald Reagan because of what he promised. His speeches contain many themes such as hope, freedom, and equality which every American citizen looks for in times of war and chaos. He showed that he was a good person through his wholesome attitude towards issues that would have otherwise caused panic if not dealt with collectedly. I also think his trustworthiness added to his credibility in speeches. People trust that if Reagan promises to do something, he will deliver. They wouldn’t want to listen to a president promise big things, only to forget about it later.

Because of these attributes, people can trust Reagan for he is like them and down-to-earth.
